Survival, Sustainability...and Sweat!

Survival...

On the fourth Saturday every August, over 1000 women come together to make a difference by participating in the annual Y-Me softball tournament. They play to raise funds for a cause which has touched so many; they play to honor a friend or a loved one; they play to support teammates recently diagnosed; and they play to have fun along the way.

This year was the 25th straight year, and on Saturday, August 24th, over 1000 supporters came together to help raise tens of thousands of dollars that is gifted directly to a University of Chicago breast cancer researcher, Dr. Kay Macleod.  Dr. MacLoed’s U of C research lab works on how the metabolism of cell organelles that break down nutrients is linked to the spread of breast cancer with the aim of finding a way to block cancer from advancing. Funds from last year’s Y-Me Softball tournament paid for a centrifuge, a piece of equipment that’s essential to MacLeod’s research.

Joan Each-Rowan and many team-members from her 2 Everythings Relative Salons participated by playing in the tournament.  This event holds a very special place in her heart since Joan is a breast cancer survivor herself, and very active in her support for the Y-Me foundation.

Joan hosts multiple fundraisers and events during the year that serve to educate fellow survivors and salon clients on 'self-care' and the benefits of using plant-based skin and hair care like AVEDA.  This October, they hosted 2 'Glam & Glow' events - with all proceeds going towards supporting the Y-Me organization.

As the owner of 2 AVEDA Concept salons, sustainability and operating her salons in the most Eco-friendly manner are also very important to Joan.  This steadfast commitment to the earth was the reason behind her decision to sponsor these years Y-Me softball tournament by donating 1000 Easydry Eco-towels to the participants.  Let's be honest...it's August and after playing softball all-day for a great cause...there's going to be some serious sweating going on!  😅😅🤣

What is Easydry?

Joan uses Easydry at both salon locations as an Eco-friendly alternative to old-fashioned cotton salon towels.  Since Easydry is made from completely from 100% sustainably harvested medical-grade wood-pulp, it is hygienic, 3 times more absorbent then cotton and is promised to biodegrade within 90 days (unlike cotton, which takes an average of 3 years to break down).

Also, using one Easydry towel saves 5 Liters of water - this equates to tens of thousands of Liters being saved each year.  And the energy savings is a huge plus, but the time they save by not having to spend hours a day doing laundry is a welcome relief.  This enables the team at Everythings Relative to spend more time serving their clients -  this may be the best benefit of all!

I'm incredibly honored to have the opportunity to work with Joan; entrepreneur, humanitarian, environmentalist, survivor...friend.    I'd like to thank her and the team at Everythings Relative Salons for sharing this story with me.  💗
